Miller PT is here to support your journey with professionalism, kindness, and encouragement every step of the way — including when it comes to managing TMJ discomfort. This month, we want to share a great piece on how physical therapy can help ease jaw tension, improve mobility, and reduce pain so you can feel more comfortable in everyday movements and take meaningful strides toward lasting relief. Of course, if you need any questions answered, we are here!
Physical therapy (PT) can be very effective for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain because it addresses not just the jaw, but also the muscles, posture, and movement patterns that contribute to the problem.
A PT works on tight or overactive muscles such as:
Jaw muscles (masseter, temporalis, pterygoids)
Neck and upper shoulder muscles
This is done through manual therapy, soft tissue release, and stretching, which can significantly reduce pain and jaw stiffness.
TMJ pain often comes from poor movement patterns (jaw deviating, clicking, locking). We can help by:
Teaching controlled jaw opening/closing
Improving joint mobility when it’s restricted
Reducing excessive joint stress

Forward head posture and rounded shoulders put extra strain on the jaw. PT addresses:
Neck and upper-back posture
Ergonomics (desk, phone use, sleep position)
Better posture = less jaw tension.
Weak stabilizing muscles can overload the TMJ. PT includes:
Gentle jaw stabilization exercises
Neck and upper-back strengthening
This helps the jaw move smoothly and reduces flare-ups.

Tension headaches
Ear pain
Facial pain
By treating the muscular and nerve components, PT can reduce these associated symptoms.
Home exercises
Relaxation techniques (important if clenching/grinding)
Habits to avoid (chewing gum, nail biting, jaw clenching)
Jaw pain with clicking or popping
Pain when chewing or yawning
Headaches linked to jaw or neck tension
TMJ pain caused or worsened by stress or posture
After dental work or injury
Dental splints/night guards (often complementary)
Medical or dental treatment for severe joint damage
PT works best alongside dental or medical care if needed.
