Cold Laser

Miller Physical Therapy offers Cold Laser to our patients as an add-on modality to reduce their healing time and get them back to doing what they love most!

What is Cold Laser?

Cold Laser Therapy helps accelerate the healing process of various acute and chronic conditions by reducing pain, spasms, swelling and inflammation, and thereby improving overall function of the affected tissue.

How does it work?

Cold lasers are handheld devices used by a trained and qualified clinician and is directly placed over various points of the injured area for up to 10 minutes of total treatment time. The “cold” light photons emitted by the laser pass through the skin to a depth on 1 to 1 ½ inches. Once they reach their target area, these photons interact with the light-sensitive elements within the cells of the affected tissue. This increases the intracellular metabolism and ATP production of the affected tissue resulting in the normalization of damaged cells, a reduction in pain, swelling, and inflammation. The effect of Cold Laser Therapy effectively speeds up healing time.

What conditions does it treat?

Cold laser can be effective in treating a great variety of acute and chronic conditions. From research and treatment experience we have found that cold laser therapy has proven itself to be most effective with:

  • Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow (medial and lateral epicondylitis)
  • Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, as well as acute inversion sprains of the ankle complex
  • Supraspinatus or Bicipital tendonitis and surgical repairs of rotator cuff tendons
  • Various muscular, tendon, or ligament strains/sprains of the wrist & hand
  • Muscular spasms of the cervical paraspinal and suboccipital musculature
  • Trochanteric bursitis of the hip
  • Iliotibial band syndrome (Runner’s knee)
  • Overuse and inflammation of the patellar ligament

Is Cold Laser safe to use?

Cold laser treatment is non-surgical and noninvasive. As the client, you should have no physical response to the treatment. You should not experience any discomfort, tingling, or pain. Additionally, no serious side-effects have been reported with the use of cold laser.

How often do I need to use it?

Research indicates that depending on the condition, the benefits of cold laser treatment are realized within 7-10 treatments. Treatments are most effective and safe when performed in sequence with other treatment modalities, such as electrical stimulation, thermotherapy, and therapeutic massage. Cold Laser Therapy can be scheduled along with your regular treatments.

Is it covered by my health insurance?

Due to its relative novelty, most insurance plans do not reimburse Cold Laser Therapy. However, progress is being made and many insurance companies are recognizing its effectiveness in a variety of healthcare settings, including physical therapy. For the time being, we offer affordable cold laser packages to our clients as a treatment adjunct.
