Miller Family In Action

Voyage, travel, and change of place impart vigor.  Seneca

The Miller family has three kinds of family vacations:  active, active and active.

I’m sure that’s no surprise, considering my vocation and dedication to healthy living.  What may be a surprise is that, even though we’re Floridians, snow sports are a family favorite.

We recently had a great time in Vermont enjoying the novel sensation of snowy weather, bundling up like Ralphie’s little brother and shushing down the slopes.

We weren’t the only ones enjoying the mountain as a family.  It was great to see families with kids of all ages – from youngsters like ours making their way down
the bunny slope to young adults tackling advanced runs – all participating as a unit and loving the healthy activity.  Taking a break from the routine and enjoying
“an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling” (a fancy way of saying “vacation”) has benefits beyond the obvious.

o An annual vacation can cut a person’s risk of heart attack by 50 percent.

o Blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of epinephrine – a stress hormone – decline on holidays of only one or two days.

o Travelers rate their overall health one full point higher (on a scale of 1 to 5) while on vacation. They also get three times more deep sleep after their vacation and sleep almost 20 minutes longer after their vacation.

o Leisure has been found to contribute to overall well-being by helping people maintain both their physical and mental health.

Even the anticipation of vacation travel generates an increase in positive feelings
about one’s life as a whole, including family, finances, and health!

Summer will be here before we know it.  If you’re thinking about or are already planning an active family vacation we can give you some tips on how to prep each family member, no matter what their age or physical fitness level, in order to minimize the risk of injury.

Give us a call, and we’ll get you set for a bon voyage!
